Building measures: renovation of an Art Nouveau historic building of 750 sqm from the early 1900s, on four floors, surrounded by a garden of about 1000 sqm
Working period: 2007/2010
Client: an American couple of art lovers and enthusiasts
Overview
The project in a nutshell: I was in charge of the complete renovation of the villa, including the reconstruction of the roof and the façades, with the recovery of the original decorations underneath the cornice. The project also included the addition of two lifts inside the villa: one connecting to the new garage (built according to my project) of about 120 sqm, underground compared to the garden in front of the villa, and the second serving the four floors of the building.
The garage and the garden
In order to create the underground garage (dug out under the portion in front of the house), I redesigned the garden, working on the harmonious insertion of the paths and the divisions of the areas, including the creation of a small swimming pool and the recovery of the original gazebo. For the garden landscaping, I actively collaborated with the landlord, a great fan of roses and cacti, to create a unique and customized Mediterranean garden.
The interiors
Although a total overhaul of the installations was necessary, I concentrated my efforts on fully respecting the original distribution of the spaces, preserving the original floors and stuccoes, and creating new frescoes in the main halls.
The house owners, passionate collectors of 20th century art, are fascinated and very keen on the study of colour. We worked in very close synergy to find the tones that best represented their wishes, while respecting the traditional colours of the Art Nouveau period.
The choice of furniture was made by the landlady. My assistance was needed to insert pieces of suitable size and functional to the spaces and uses required.
For the bathrooms, there was a great deal of study and attention to detail: the rooms were made with hand-glazed tiles of Tuscan workmanship, carefully chosen by the landlady, whom I accompanied and assisted in the attention to detail and in the design of some special pieces to enhance her ideas and requests, such as the insertion of a bathtub in the red bathroom.
For the kitchen, I chose a modern style which contrasts with the rest of the house: the colours were chosen by the landlady, while I worked on designing the distribution of spaces, optimizing them according to the habits and customs of the owners, making the arrangement of the various areas functional and practical.
The light
I carried out a great work of designing the detail applied to the light. For these spaces, it was important to keep traditional chandeliers in the middle of the rooms, so I worked with the glassworks Vetreria De Majo, choosing some pieces from their catalogue and designing others of particular sizes and shapes, like the one in the reception room and in the stairwell.
