Farmer’s cottage

esterno villa in mattoni

Technical data sheet

Building measures: restoration of a 190 sqm single-family villa built in 1930 on three floors in Bordighera.

Working period: 2012/2013

Client: a young family

Overview

The project in a nutshell: I was in charge of the renovation and refurbishment of this building, which housed a stable on the ground floor and a farmer’s dwelling on the first floor, to make it the main residence of a young couple.

The transformation

The internal heights of the attics and the attic room, and the client’s desire to undertake a radical transformation of the facility allowed me to rethink the spaces in their entirety and to create a third inhabitable floor in the attic room, lowering the high ceiling of the accommodation on the first floor.

The interiors

In agreement with the clients, I simplified the interiors as much as possible, creating a large living room with kitchenette on the ground floor, two bedrooms with bathroom on the first floor, and the master bedroom with bathroom and walk-in wardrobe in the attic. I set great value on the internal staircase, making it the strength of the open spaces and the passages between the various floors.

I chose simple materials that could recall the rural origins of the building, and for much of the furniture, I reused family pieces combined with elements designed for the building, such as the bookcase in the living room.

Façades and details

I rethought all the details while respecting the original design of the building, maintaining the exposed stone on the façade and inserting a new round window on the attic floor, in harmony with the other openings present.

The design of the window and door frames and the grilles protecting them were extensively studied. For this, I worked with a company that does not work with standard profiles and allowed me to take care of all the closing systems in detail. Finally, I designed the iron and glass pergola to protect the entrance, taking up the scans of the openings on the ground floor.
